"My first introduction to the Maori arts was as a student at Rotorua Boys High School learning wood carving [Whakairo]. My teacher suggested I apply for a position at Te Takapu o Rotowhio [the Pounamu School within Te Puia]. My application was successful and for a time studied under the guidance of Lewis Gardiner and then Stacy Gordine. I graduated 3rd Intake of Te Takapu o Rotowhio and have secured a position as a junior craver with my first teacher and mentor Lewis Gardiner at his working studio Rakai Jade.
I am passionate about my culture and enjoy learning all I can about the arts. My goal for the future is to immerse myself in the pounamu carving and honed my skills. If in the process I can provide for my family then that is a bonus.
I am all for preserving our culture and educating myself and others about our pounamu and envisage so for many years to come."
