"I have been a physicist, teacher, technology business developer, art collector, and now a full-time artist. Abstract art has always had the greatest appeal for me. My artistic goal is to create visually-arresting abstract paintings in the minimalist tradition with color as an integral component.
As an ex-pat American, living in New Zealand for the past 32 years has provided me with a rich multi-cultural experience and artistic fabric that, while not deliberately an explicit part of my paintings, are in my soul and thus are in my art.
My current portfolio of work, “Along a Line”, is an on-going exploration involving straight lines, a single circle and colour, with the juxtaposition of light and dark, hot and cold, primary and secondary inviting the viewers’ eyes to embrace what is there and what might not be there. These paintings are an amalgam of the abstract, minimalist, conceptual and hard-edge painting movements, without falling uniquely into any one specific category. This approach evolved over a short period of time – driven by the self-imposed restrictions placed on this series of paintings.
The paintings do not represent any particular objects or messages. Each painting is a visual presentation that seemed aesthetically interesting, perhaps quizzical, but always embracing life. I hope the viewers find them equally so, and I encourage them to respond with their own unique perspectives and interpretations.
The computer is my journal. Planning a painting is an open-ended exploration that often has a life of its own. Using the computer allows me to repeatedly alter a plan, both in terms of elements of the painting and their context-dependent colours, and save the results. The selected plan is then mathematically scaled to the desired painting size. In contract to the freewheeling planning process, the laying out and painting steps are an exercise of meticulous care and precision."
The paintings are on MDF board or paper to maintain crisp lines. I construct the board support structures and prepare them for painting, which I enjoy as an important aspect of the creative process.
