Michelle Mayn’s delicate weavings, sculptural objects and installations made through the meditative practice of weaving by hand retain the mauri/life essence of the natural fibres and crafting process. Patterns and codes woven through the work become a method of exploring and expressing conceptual ideas of identity, spirituality and our relationship to environment.
Mayn was born in Auckland (NZ) and studied Traditional and Contemporary Maori Weaving at Unitec - Te Whare Waananga o Wairaka in 2011. She has exhibited in group shows in New Zealand and the United States since 2010, was a finalist in the 2015 WOW Awards with her first solo show later that year. She currently divides her time between Kohukohu in the Hokianga and New York City, where she continues study at The Art Students League of New York.
