AARON SCYTHE - 2BHOLD

AARON SCYTHE - 2BHOLD

Works to hold and behold

13 - 20 February

17 Osborne Street, Newmarket

A belief that his art is only fully realised when there is an interaction between the maker and the user inspired Aaron to create this collection of items to be utilised and add beauty to your everyday life.

Included are pieces that at one time were part of daily Māori life, such as Kete and mere or patu, recreated in Aaron’s signature meld of 16th century Japanese glazing techniques, of which he has become a master.

Sets of cups and tumblers, plates and bowls, large vases and tiny vessels, goblets and glazed mugs all adorned on every surface and ready 2BHOLD.

Aaron’s early career saw him working as a slip caster and then studying ceramics in the 1980’s, before moving to Australia in 1989 and discovering a love for Japanese ceramic techniques. Over the years Aaron has spent a lot of time in Japan honing his craft, studying, experimenting, teaching and building kilns while all the time exhibiting.

In 2011, Aaron returned to New Zealand following the Fukushima meltdown, continuing to develop his style and making prolifically.

Inspiration for Aaron’s quirky style comes at random. Any plans he might have rarely take shape. “Maybe 25-30 years ago I used to really consider what I would make. I would have an artist sketchbook and plan things out, but often now, if I think of something, I will go into the studio and not make it.”

“One of the main reasons I really like ceramics is that they can be a bridge towards art. Rather than getting in-depth and philosophical, ceramics are something you use in your mundane life, which is (hopefully) beautiful. A lovely plate is so much nicer to eat off than an ugly plate."

"I feel that a piece doesn’t actually come to life until someone starts using it. It’s an art form that is only fully realised when there is an interaction between the maker and the user." Aaron Scythe
