Collection: Heath Wilkes

Heath lives in Oratia, a stone’s throw from the western beaches of Piha & Karekare. He grew up surfing & has a great love of the outdoors, which helps inspire his creative practice. He has worked in the design & art field for the last 26 years.

Heath went on to study a Bachelor of Design at AUT - an enduring interest in cameras & film, & access to high-end scanning equipment in his design jobs sparked an interest in the cross-over between original artwork & its capacity for reproduction.

Working daily with digital technologies has inspired Heath to create more simplified works in his own practice, using pre-digital processes such as carving, screen, & woodblock printing. He also uses photography & pigment printing & produces resin & porcelain objects using silicon & plaster moulds.

Motivated by his family history, Heath incorporates motifs inspired by his connection
with French Polynesia, where he still has family. Growing up he was surrounded by photos, books of Tahiti, & family heirlooms of carved objects.
